JamSpace: Designing A Collaborative Networked Music Space for Novices

نویسنده

  • Michael Gurevich
چکیده

An interactive music environment to support real-time jamming by novices and amateur musicians over a network is described. JamSpace takes advantage of the low latency and connectivity of a local area network (LAN) to allow real-time rhythmic collaboration from isolated locations. Several demonstrated needs that motivate the design are discussed in detail. These include technologicallymediated ways of restoring casual social interactions to the domain of music creation and the preservation of anonymity and privacy for amateur musicians in a group setting. JamSpace’s design addresses these needs with a novel hardware and software interface incorporating listening, private rehearsal, mixing, looping tracks and real-time jamming. User-configurable levels of interactivity are analyzed in terms of social spaces.

Playpens, Fireflies and Squeezables: New Musical Instruments for Bridging the Thoughtful and the Joyful

The author discusses research in music cognition and education indicating that novices and untrained students perceive and learn music in a fundamentally different manner than do expert musicians. Based on these studies, he suggests implementing high-level musical percepts and constructionist learning schemes in new expressive musical instruments that would provide thoughtful and joyful musical...

Issues and techniques for collaborative music making on multi-touch surfaces

A range of systems exist for collaborative music making on multi-touch surfaces. Some of them have been highly successful, but currently there is no systematic way of designing them, to maximise collaboration for a particular user group. We are particularly interested in systems that will engage novices and experts. We designed a simple application in an initial attempt to clearly analyse some ...

Simpletones: A System of Collaborative Physical Controllers for Novices

This paper introduces Simpletones, an interactive sound system that enables a sense of musical collaboration for non-musicians. Participants can easily create simple sound compositions in real time by collaboratively operating physical artifacts as sound controllers. The physical configuration of the artifacts requires coordinated actions between participants to control sound (thus requiring, a...

WIJAM: A Mobile Collaborative Improvisation Platform under Master-players Paradigm

Music jamming is an extremely difficult task for musical novices. Trying to extend this meaningful and highly enjoyable activity to a larger recipient group, we present WIJAM, a mobile application for an ad-hoc group of musical novices to perform improvisation along with a music master. In this “master-players” paradigm, the master offers a music backing, orchestrates the musical flow, and give...

Computer musicking : designing for collaborative digital musical interaction

This thesis is about the design of software which enables groups of people to make music together. Networked musical interaction has been an important aspect of Sound and Music Computing research since the early days, although collaborative music software has yet to gain mainstream popularity, and there is currently limited research on the design of such interfaces. This thesis draws on researc...
